@CTL what? I know we're still a ways away from that, but spark systems have been proven capable of handling millions of cycles without fault. The ammunition still needs tons work, and we might need a bit more improvement in battery technology. Firearm development is slow for good reason, but I think it's possible. Electronic buffers need a big leap in battery tech though.

There are benefits for small arms, like less moving parts, underwater operation, a trigger that can be designed without the rest of the gun in mind, and possibly more stable ammunition, and variable firing rates for automatic fire. Oh, and it's easier for civilians to uh.... show NFA laws regarding automatic weapons the respect the deserve?
