North dakota and south dakota
Or north and south carolina
Or virginia
No idea, people just like naming shit weird names.
Like Italians and food.
Dude place names should be just that
Like
If you I don't know like fucking farm there it should be called Farmlands
Virginia has nothing to do with Virgins, so there’s that.
Virgin marie maybe?
That’s plausible, yeah.
Right
Then there’s West Virginia, which is Virginia but, well, West.
Ironically that name has more meaning.
Interesting though
Name something "north" or "west" and you've got a new thing
Like the kardashians
North and South Carolina has always been North and South Carolina, though.
Virginia was once one state.
*y t h o*
A large Unionist chunk of it seceded from the Confederate-controlled Virginia during the US Civil War, that chunk obviously being West Virginia.
rite
Well are you interested in europe though?
This new world thing is far too simplistic for my suffisticated european naming system
I am, actually.
For an American I know a shitload about non-western Europe.
Give me place names and I'll try and disect
Easy one; Ukraine.
You probably know it already
You don't have to be a slavist to know
I’m seeing if you do, though.
Ukraine is an anglophied version of Ukrajina which means "border land"
Literally meaning in the border land
There you go.
Krajina means borderland but Kraj means land but in polish it's country
Uh, ~~Swedistan~~ Sweden.
In swedish it's sverige
Wait hold on
I only specialise in slavic places
Maybe I can pull out a slavic meaning
That’s alright.
