Mainly anything that strays from purism and experiments or just has elements of black metal

like Agalloch

not much familiar with agalloch but from what ive heard they're ok it's just they definitely aren't outstanding in any way whatsoever, soft and slow, the best black metal are the bands that are firmly withing the genre but are clearly evolving it, not many top bands now do lo-fi like the 2nd wave pioneers so mainstream isn't about some autistic stubborn kvlt purism in fact bands who are like that are often deemed simply uninteresting and copycats(tho there are good ones like even from this year I can give you very solid faithful releases), so again, the best bands now in my opinion are still described simply "black metal", you don't need any more adjectives like atmo or experimental(actually might show you actual experimental bm and im pretty sure you won't like it that much), so these are the bands that are clearly very much within the genre but when you compare their sound to 2nd wave you can notice a very substantial development, my favs right now is icelandic Misthyrming and many projects of Naas Alcameth(Aoratos, Bestia Arcana, Nightbringer, Akhlys)
