openRA is way better
(the Tiberian Sun mod for OpenRA is in beta and almost done btw)
i still have a cd with tiberian sun translated to polish by some random russian
the cd has "POLSKA TA ANGIELSKA WERSIJA" written on it
Problem with the official C&C games was that they were utterly imbalanced and horrible for online play. They were made when no one had a broadband internet and a single player campaign was the selling point, with multiplayer being just a feature people rarely used (this changed years later only with Quake III). The distribution (those were CD times) enforced a development cycle with hard deadlines so no one had time to make fine adjustments and balancing, sometimes even skimping on proper testing. Patches were made, but those weren't depended upon before continuous integration times. C&C, RA and other such games just came to early. If they were made when starcraft was, south koreans would fight commies instead of zergs as a national sport.
But the guys at OpenRA took the cnc engine, rewrote it completely from scratch for new hardware and remade the games (original C&C, Red Alert, Dune 2000, Tiberian Sun and there are also other interesting original mods) focusing on online multiplayer.
shills time:
I've seen it and it's brillant. The Red Alert mod is the best one and it can certainly compete with top competitive RTS games. It implements all the original features from the game plus many of extra new ones, like modern gui improvements and better gameplay mechanics (but keeping skin-close to the spirit of the original game at the same time) and makes fine adjustments to the power balance based on hard counters (unlike original RA) and modern RTS tactics. One of the best things about it is that no unit in the game is useless, every unit has its specific role to play and you can't just spam tanks because they'll be obliterated by cheap rocker infantry which in turn will get executed by even cheaper rifle infantry which are weak against artillery which is devastated by air units which are paper for anti air which is crushed by tanks etc (there are many such cycles because RA has quite a lot of unit types). So you need to take care of a proper unit composition of your tactical groups all the time if you want to win.
The thing which really sold this game to me was that infantry is finally important in RA. And not just important, it's crucial, it's the backbone of your army. Which is so significant for me, because it's a post ww2/cold war game so infantry obviously has to have a crucial role for a game like this to make sense. If you think about it, rarely any other RTS games care so much about low tech tier, while infantry in RA is important at every part of the game even in late game with all of the tech unlocked.
imo it's the best open retro game remake out there. And I'm saying that knowing about other such great remakes like OpenTTD or OpenRCT2
that's the reason why I'm rooting for the Tiberian Sun mod for OpenRA. IIR it still doesn't have all of the features implemented in and the balancing isn't just there yet (the OpenRA devs first implement all the features, then carry on with the balancing as their rule of thumb) but it looks promising. But heck, a lot could've changed since the last time I've checked (and it was a long ago)
