The reason why leftists oppose nationalism is because it shows itself as a tool of the bourgeoisie to control the proletariat in a la divide and conquer. This all goes back to the Paris commune, when the exiled ruling class bargained with the fucking Prussians (this was during the Franco-Prussian War) to get Paris back from the Communards

Most leftists would be against nationalism beacuse they see the nation as a product of the state, and the state as a tool used by one class to oppress another class
