the sole reason why there are grammatical cases in German is to give the speakers the ability to denote the subject (nominative), the direct object in case of transitive verbs [accusative] and the indirect object [dative], without having to add inelegant (imo) extra prepositions or having to deduce the relation from context or having to introduce double meaning ***or making the word order more rigid than it needs to be***. ofc there's also the genitive case which denotes possession and i find it very elegant if a little vestigial in German (compared with the [commonly used] genitive case in Polish) @rogalik
