@yung All major trans-continental trade before the Portuguese was funneled through the Middle East, so when the Portuguese discovered that you could sail around Africa, it created a whole new and much cheaper and efficient trade route from Europe to India/China and back, and since it was Portugal and the other Europeans that monitored this trade route, they gained the upper hand in influence across the world.
