I do want totry VR, but I'm in no rush and it's only going to get cheaper from here

You can get a certified pre-owned vive for less than $400

And, the index is backwards compatible with the VIVE. Meaning you can slowly upgrade the controllers, HMD, then the tracking one by one.

I did buy a $1500 gaming computer recently, but that's with the expectation that I won't need to spend money on hardware for at least like 5-6 years

Here's the thing. $1000 contextually isn't too much. 2080 Supers cost that much, 21:9 monitors cost that much. Those things **FLEW** off of shelves when they released.
