if you lose the small brush, the animals who depend on it starve as well

In most cases that’s called a mature forest

photosynthesis requires direct sunlight

With natural factors to limit the size of large trees

often times a controlled burn is used on forests that have gone beyond those limits

Or there are also areas where forrest are so thick there is no under growth
