There is a brewery near me called Small Town Brewery, and they make an ale called Not Your Fathers Vanilla Cream Ale, which has 0 hops and is spiced with ancient gruit herbs, the old German style of beer making.

I agree. From everything I can figure, drinking is a net negative, but I don't think it would be so ubiquitous in European culture if there wasn't some value to it.
It might be a value that is nearly invisible, like helping fight parasites or something, or it might be something obvious, like it makes you have more children.
