so, thered be 4 classes of magic instrument that can be found or created, wands, knives, censers and dishes
and then 4 'elements' (fire, airs, water, earth) as well as combination/variant forms
when properly prepared and applied then the caster can use the item in a ritual/spell to summon and work with a type of elemental spirit based on the item type
wands doing small intelligent spirits, censers wild shapes, dishes powerful but self-controlled genies, and knives pillars of energy
by combining instruments with the appropriate ritual and such elemental creatures can be formed, worked with, somewhat controlled, according to the items used, the caster's levels, and other stuff (like having a good spellbook of stuff to read prepared and such)
