In english you have to learn all the different ways to spell words without actually have any rules to go by. In japanese it's a bit the same, except you learn characters as you go, and one character can be used to multiple different forms (noun, verb, adjective) and once you learn it you can kind of guess the meanings of other words and character combinations when you see them
