A lot of old Skype accounts seem to be hyjacked. It only seems to be ones that haven't been used in years. It's just from what I noticed on my own account. A lot of old, unused accounts, that I know the owners haven't touched in years, so they couldn't have been phished, sending out malicious links to their contacts.

Phishing is when something tries to steal your login details. Usually done by imitating something authentic to trick people into typing their details into boxes.

Most legitmate services never will send emails asking for your login details and actively make a point to warn you that they won't. Phishing exploits people who are not aware of this, or that don't pay attention to those warnings.

Given that, I don't think in the case of these Skype accounts, that it was phishing, because they're dead accounts that haven't been used. Some I know were abandoned in favor of new accounts. I never understood why people did that.
