In 1978, one of the first Garfield strips were published, which I've dubbed the Pipe Strip. It haunts me to this very day. It goes like this; John Arbuckle is in his room, reading a newspaper. His right hand is scanning for something on a little table beside him. In the second panel, he looks up, slightly cockeyed, perhaps agitated. He asks, "Now where could my pipe be?" It really is a profound question. Where could it be? Then, in the last panel, aha! GARFIELD! John Arbuckle yells out his name, with the orange cat somewhere near but unclear with a pipe lodged firmly within his jowls. I believe that this strip represents a more pessimisstic view of the stages of life. The first panel, John is unknowing, he is without worries, not understanding that the cat has his pipe, or even wondering where his pipe has gone; much like all of us when we are young and lacking of faith or anxiety. He has yet to bite from the tree Then, in the second panel, it happens; "Now where could my pipe be?" Representing total confusion and agitation, leaving one form to the next. The last one, Garfield is the embodiment of chaos, which I'll get into later; and John yells out in rage. GARFIELD! He knows the truth, but at what cost?
