Okay, guess I should be open to learning about 'em.
Basically, in the latter half of the 19th century in the US, the northern region and southern region were really divided, the south was pro racism and the north were abolitionist.
The south was under-represented in politics

And the Confederate states were a confederation, which means the states have more control over themselves
