seems like the hate isn't unwarranted, at least when it comes to lack of polish
The biggest, real, problem, and not just people whining about something that's trivial or that has always been BioWare's style, is that they obviously rushed it out of the door without..... any bugtesting whatsoever.
The big dramatic scene at the Hyperion's bridge in the prologue was ruined for me because what they were supposed to be reacting to.... wasn't showing up and in its place was just blackness.

For one, two and three... honestly you shouldn't play them until you have all three and all their DLC.

They're meant to be one continous story.
some of my friends said dont bother with the first one and just play the second one first and work my way up from there
No, you need the first one.
The real impact of the the story in the second and third are completely lost if you don't have the first.
The story DLCs in the second game are absolutely vital to the overall plot of the third game.
The last story DLC for the third game is hands down the best bit of DLC made for any game in the history of games.
