If it were an issue with the PC and hard drive heating up too much, what would that mean for me?

You'd probably be able to get away with shutting it off when it gets too hot regularly without actually getting it fixed, though it'd limit how much you can use the computer. I had the issue of my fans not working with one of my old pcs and had to buy some usb powered ones that seemed to fix the problem. Would make that grinding sound until I bought the fans. You can also just straight up get a real fan and direct it at your computer's vents.

That comp lasted about another year before it finally went kaput, so I wouldn't expect much more from your comp

just buy a new one, back up your shit and buy a new one for fifty bucks, hdds are cheap.
