@Gservator Lots of reasons. One being an inconsistent access to models. Others being that in some cases there were little, or insufficient formal training of how to properly observe and draw from life. But a big one was likely just that they didn't exactly have a glut of photographs to reference, and would sometimes just ape earlier works of art, rather than trying to do everything from scratch, and a lack of understanding for the process and technique might result in peculiarities. They had a huge problem, for instance, with proportion and perspective.
