The head of the country's armed forces said the military had asked President Evo Morales to step down in the wake of weeks of protests.
Someone need to get Trump that armor
Anyone following Bolivia a bit? Seems there's arrest warrants out for the heads of the (corrupt) electoral commission, possibly one for Morales himself, the Speaker of the House and the Speaker of the Senate and his first vice-president has resigned, and the Mines minister has resigned
also RT have just offered Morales a job as tv presenter 😛
Cuba, Venezuela and Russia are denouncing a coup (sounds like a good thing) and Spain is complaining that the armed forces appear to be intervening
(of course Spain has a social-democrat as PM atm )
it'll be interesting to see if anyone else at the top gets arrested and also who is going to run the transition, the second Senate vice-prez says she will but will she be pushed aside?
Also an unconfirmed report the presidential plane asked to fly via Argentina but in the end stayed within Bolivian airspace
just seems like a military and/or police coup
Remember there were 3 weeks of pretty intense protests across the country after Morales proclaimed himself president for a 4th term when he hadn't won the first round either by getting a majority or leading by 10%+
so he's the one who was leading a coup
I'd call this either a return to constitutional order or a countercoup
I was expecting Maduro level crap from him and his cronies, but luckily Cuba don't seem to run the security service unlike in Venezuela, so there's a chance this country won't sink further into socialism
he did win by 10%+
the issue afaik was that the presence of irregularities in the election
granted from what i know it seems unlikely that there was manipulation on the part of morales
since polls had him leading by 10+%
and because of his actions afterward
He wasn't recognized by the OAS on this, voter fraud appears certain
well for one how trustworthy is the oas on this matter, how widespread was voter fraud, and is there any evidence that morales or someone working under his orders was directly involved?
Well getting the OAS to salute your election is a staple of elections in South America (and Central+Caribbean I guess), it's taken as a sign by the rest of the world that things went smoothly and fairly
i don't really have any faith or trust in organizations like this
Hours after polls closed the electoral court stopped publishing the results of the rapid count, which is based on photographs sent from voting stations. With 84% of ballots counted, it showed Mr Morales with a seven-point lead over Mr Mesa. The president needs a ten-point gap to avoid a runoff. When reporting resumed a day later, Mr Morales had his ten-point lead. The head of an observer mission from the Organisation of American States (oas) said he was “profoundly concerned” about the “inexplicable” change in the tally.
