Look at google glass.

Which sucks because Google Glass was so potentially great
At least MS's AR platform is still alive and growing.... I think.
They took the far more "safe" route by making it an industry tool first and expanding its market once it was proven usable.
I believe they switched it to open application from the closed aplication system they had only a year or two ago.
