@RhinoMaxTV Because the best I could do in my... I think we'll say 3-4 years of casual drawing is this.

And when I say it's more like once every Blood/Blue Moon (This one is from february.)

The smugness mocks me

2019-09-11 18:35:20 UTC

It was supposed to be a smirk like "I know whatcha doing there little one." but I'm cool with smug ^^

I started painting in April 2017 while I was in the hospital. They had pastels in the family room and I picked them up and started remembering Bob Ross. I became obsessed but was floundering around without any real guidance. 10 months ago I signed up as one of Stefan Baumann's coaching students. We have one 30 minute phone call per week. I'm going to make a video showing the homework from then till now. I was actually looking at the first painting he made me do which was a simple glass of water. and I can't believe how bad it is. Anyway, the first thing he stopped me from doing was youtube. No how to stuff. His channel is all about what to think about and what to work on. No demo. And it just clicked about 2 months ago. I highly recommend his channel for anyone who wants to improve. And @MS I'm not trying to be smug at all. Just humble as when you compare the work I did with the master I'm copying, the difference is very clear.

i'm refering to the expression

2019-09-11 18:37:25 UTC

This is called "Sunset Near Arizona" by Thomas Moran.

2019-09-11 18:39:12 UTC

@MS gotcha. I've spent 30 hours on this painting and have looked at his work longer than that. I'm amazed at how great the Hudson River painters were. Bierstade, Church, Cole, Moran. They captured the American landscape in the most beautiful way.

Generally speaking, anyone at your level who calls themself a novice can seem insulting to those at a lower level. Make of that what you will, it's just something I've observed from when other good arty people I've known have called themselves novices.

2019-09-11 18:54:15 UTC

No no no... That wasn't the feeling I was trying to convey.

You know how artists can be... Always (and unecessarily) comparing themselves to others when in fact they should be comparing themselves with their former selves who couldn't do much to begin with.

2019-09-11 18:55:28 UTC

I prefer making fun of it. It's better to laugh that you can't do yet as good as your peer over there than tell yourself that your art is shit.

The artist can be very infantile y'know...

@juryrigging I hear ya. That wasn't my intention. Maybe a better word would be apprentice. @Jun I definitely notice my progress from complete beginner to where I am now. I

2019-09-11 19:11:38 UTC

You could call yourself a journeyman artist 😛

2019-09-11 19:11:55 UTC

I've reached a level of competence with certain things however, my drawings are much to be desired.

haha. lots to learn which is why I hesitate at labeling myself an artist. However, journeyman does sound better than novice.

2019-09-11 19:26:53 UTC

I'll steal that. Journeyman artist.

He's saying WALES in every text chat

2019-09-12 00:23:02 UTC

so people on twitter were complaining about women in art having waists that are too small, by saying "where are her organs" and "how is her back?" so i made fun of them in a song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo2xa3FTsmA

Its not like men have 'unrealistic body standards' in comic book characters who are stylized and heroicly preportioned...

2019-09-12 01:01:30 UTC

*Cough*

2019-09-12 01:02:29 UTC

next thing you know you will tell me anime characters are giving unrealistic standards to people because of their huge eyes

2019-09-12 01:24:12 UTC

It's like art is subjective and don't have to be realistic, or something.

2019-09-12 01:37:48 UTC
