Just don’t Get Ayrton Senna’d

2019-08-05 19:05:24 UTC

Hello and welcome to the zany adventures of good ol Uncle Joe. on today's epidsode : The adventures in the stan states

2019-08-05 19:07:07 UTC

One day unlce joe was looking at the map of the USSR and he had an idea
uncle joe: " what if I just dam up both the rivers that feed the Aral sea, then we could irrigate the area around it and produce lots of cotton. oh what a smart man I am"

2019-08-05 19:07:50 UTC

Uncle joe forgetting that the aral sea produced much of the USSR's fish supply and kept the local climate from becoming a desert

2019-08-05 19:08:02 UTC

but who cares a gotta love some cotton

2019-08-05 19:08:54 UTC

so once the rivers were dammed and the cotton was growing someone noticed that the sea was evaporating. and it kept on evaporating.

2019-08-05 19:09:22 UTC

Now by this time uncle joe has rocked up to the pearly gates so he didn't know

2019-08-05 19:09:40 UTC

but quite soon all the water disappeared and the fish died.

2019-08-05 19:09:59 UTC

and once the lake was gone the area got hotter. MUCH hotter

2019-08-05 19:10:21 UTC

almost like a desert ( cough cough )

2019-08-05 19:10:32 UTC

now once the ares

2019-08-05 19:10:35 UTC

area

2019-08-05 19:11:05 UTC

was a desert someone noticed that the sandstorms and hot environment was killing all the cotton plants

2019-08-05 19:11:44 UTC

so in the end the sea dried up, the area around ruined, the fish are all dead and all the cotton is gone

2019-08-05 19:12:06 UTC

but hey just another day in the crazy adventures of Uncle Joe

2019-08-05 19:33:11 UTC

the later parts only happened in the late 80s under economic liberalization

2019-08-05 19:37:49 UTC

who made the decisions to dam up the rivers. wasn't Gorbachev

2019-08-05 19:44:07 UTC

"In the 1960s and 1970s the Soviets started using the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya to irrigate extensive cotton fields in the Central Asian plain"

2019-08-05 19:45:59 UTC

Nice going Krushchev/Brezhnev

2019-08-05 19:46:01 UTC

<:CheLaughing:449938854678495242>

2019-08-05 19:49:44 UTC

apart from the fact how it destroyed the aral sea

2019-08-05 19:50:43 UTC

what actually happened

2019-08-05 19:52:33 UTC

Yeah it fucked up when they diverted the rivers in the 60s

2019-08-05 19:54:03 UTC

@Monolith so I guess the glorious leaders of the USSR can actually fuck up sometimes

2019-08-05 19:54:41 UTC

>tfw non socialist leaders happen to be the ones who fuck things up

2019-08-05 19:54:57 UTC

im not talking about them

2019-08-05 19:55:06 UTC

i am talking about the aral crisis

2019-08-05 19:55:22 UTC

which was 100% caused by the soviets

2019-08-05 19:55:34 UTC

Plus it wasnt the leaders who made these decisions

2019-08-05 19:56:17 UTC

It was the commissions for planning construction agriculture etc that made the decision

2019-08-05 19:56:24 UTC

they gave the orders. they did this. whatever party apparatchik did this they were an arm of the soviets

2019-08-05 19:56:43 UTC

Thats not how the government works lmao

2019-08-05 19:57:00 UTC

whatever office did this the soviets were centralized. they could have overruled this but they didn't

2019-08-05 19:57:23 UTC

Yeah so Stalin ordered every individual road that needed to be constructed

2019-08-05 19:57:35 UTC

@Monolith no sorry mate no

2019-08-05 19:57:45 UTC

no shifting the conversation

2019-08-05 19:57:53 UTC

the soviets did this

2019-08-05 19:57:57 UTC

directly

2019-08-05 19:58:08 UTC

What are the Soviets?
