@Firefly Communism requires a dictator, a truly classless society needs it. Brutal regimes have been implemented in every country that it has been tried, and they never got beyond a totalitarian dictatorship.
*Transition* to communism requires a dictatorship or similar authority. This is called socialism - the dictatorship of the proletariat. Communism is only able to happen *after* socialism.
In case you misunderstand the difference.
Exactly what I'm saying, and it's impossible for the society in question to advance to communism while being classless.
Why? I would have thought it was the opposite. Classlessness being a prerequisite for communism.
Not at all. A dictatorship is made in the socialism stage, and then never advances.
That's possible. But from the communist's point of view, if communism ever had a chance, it would have to come out from socialism, not before.
At least that's the Leninist position.
Understood. But left to their own devices, classes naturally form. That's how humanity began civilization. It's natural, is it not?
Yes, but human nature changes over time. Specifically, Marx and Engels suggest, it changes according to a historical pattern, called historical materialism. Which says that material differences in society are the catalyst for change, and revolutions between classes. While such tensions exist, human nature will have to adapt to it, in order to survive. Accordingly, it is predicted, that humans must learn to overcome material conflict and class tensions, and the only way to do that is through evolving past class pressures and differences.
Why not just be in conflict forever, you might ask? The second component to predicting the dissolving of class is another theory called dialectical materialism, which states that contradictions, specific opposing forces, cannot continue forever. The universe is in constant motion and change, and forms also change over time, things evolve. Since not even class is eternal, and humans have existed long before civilisation, it stands to reason that humans will eventually outgrow class, one way or another.
Predicting this future, it is somewhat an inevitable development, even if the timeline is not exactly known. Communists seek to align their own subject thoughts with this material analyst, because they predict it will happen anyway, and that in doing so can help ease humanity's transition into a future classless society.
This is probably the last time I'm ever going to explain something like this here because I am sick of talking about it. But if that was clear enough then you're welcome.
