Crusades were in response to the southern war religion encroaching. They were offensive but were well justified.
What WASN'T justified were the instances of pillaging like the sack of Constantinople during the fourth(?) crusade. They sacked their own religious bretheren because the leaders of the crusade from Venice had it out for the Byzantines

Most wars are never for religion, but for political power. They just use religion as a means of convincing people to support said war.
