i turned it over by hand so i narrowed that down... i began to think relay/solenoid but i need something to contact the 2 points without cooking myself

I would say the solenoid on the starter motor isn’t engaging properly (smaller tube on the larger tube body of the starter motor). Try tapping it with the end piece of wood while someone else try’s the starter. (Wood isn’t conductive and won’t damage the solenoid) you are just trying to give the solenoid a small jolt to see if it will engage the flywheel if it does engage with a tap then it will either be a case of taking the starter motor off and giving a good clean or renew.
