Phoenix - Vegas is a route that could be well served by train... There's no highway connecting the 2 and millions of people travel it. Having the ability to take a train even if it's not high speed would be beneficial

If you run enough trains for the system to be useful, any given train would have 1-2 people on it.
Then, when you get to your station, you're on foot across towns that are incredibly spread out. Nothing is in reasonable walking distance.

I can understand inter-city rail systems. In that particular context, it makes a degree of sense. But my experience with the UK system was that it had stops in every small town, which I don't think is feasible here.
