I think that it is important to try to maximize the well being of people through politics. I think the influence of destructive human urges should be minimized for the good of all. Why do I care for the good of all? Because I can see no reason why my life or the life of my neighbor is worth more than the life of someone on the other side of the world or from a different ethnic group or race or whatever.
Pain exists to be bad and I think we should probably try to minimize it. I think pleasure is good and we should try to maximize it.
