I was thinking post-civil war but in an alternative timeline where the south manages to stalemate the war and secede

california, oregon, and nevada secede after the south's successful secession as well

so you'd have the US, CSA, and three states in the west

somebody could be canada and mexico

and we could fight over railroads and territories and stuff

then we could advance from the 1860s onward
