primitive peoples always have trouble integrating

same with any drastically different culture i suspect, integration has to be slow

august resents the guy because he feels he needs to catch up to the modern world, but that welsh man is the only way he can, so he feels like the welsh guy has all this power over him

it's an uncontrollable human feeling

imagine if earth was at the edge of the universe, and there was this alien civilization that was much larger

and some alien comes to earth and says, well all alien trinkets can only be bought with alien money, which is worth a million times more than any currency on earth

so the only way to get alien money is through the alien guy who comes to earth and talks to you

meanwhile, earthlings are fully aware of alien civilization, it gets broadcast on the internet, tv, etc.

there are successful humans that move up in alien society, but then there's an underclass living on earth

and you can move up if you have enough alien money, but the only way to get that money is through like one guy

and you can't afford a trip to the alien land

i think that's what i feels like

and say the aliens have a cure for cancer, but it can only be bought with alien money

your friends have cancer, etc.

i think that this isnt fully comparable

how so

but the difference lies in how to achieve it

last thing you would do is sperg out towards the alien friend

say, in order to integrate into alien society, you have to give up western values too

like some cultural thing you value - eg. the new guineans value their rituals

yeah, and thats the main thing here why this example imo doesnt work too well

im just trying to explain why it's hard - this doesn't change the fact that integration has to be slow for drastically different cultures

its just that your example is fairly compatible/graspable in comparison

@woll3 well basically, if you encounter a superior culture, you'll immerse yourself in it right

then you'll grow detached from your old way of life, but then you gotta give up western values - so it's a great temptation, self inflicted suffering that's impossible to avoid

it would be different if you cannot comprehend their logic

you can cut yourself off entirely from the alien civilization, but know that your friends will ahve to die of incurable diseases that humans can't deal with on their own

or that you will

well, the aliens don't have to be super exotic for the example to work

thats what i mean, we are advanced enough to adapt and grasp concepts that are foreign

no, humans aren't perfectly logical

none of us are - there's cultural concepts that we can't fully grasp enough to be deemed 'integrated'
