to continue my analogy, what the left suggest we do is the equivalent of the US abandoning its armies, and hoping that its enemies decide to be nice and the love to rub-off onto them and them do the same

Indivualism is not incompatible with groups. It just means that the individual should be free to choose who they want to cooperate with and when. Left and right identitarians want to be able to tell individuals what group they have to be in.

i believe in individualism, but i'm wary when i see groups of people gaining power and propagating themselves, and i don't want to see my own culture completely turned upside down

What groups? Because, as different individuals, we likely want different groups to have influence.
