I don't know about the Jesus statue, but the whole memorial was built with virtual slave labour. It was the republican POWs and sympathisers which built it with terrible conditions and underpaid and underfed. The majority of the graves were for the Nationalist soldiers, while many republican soldiers were dumped into mass graves
