yes, we could, but i'm not asking to move into discussing it

2018-04-12 06:08:23 UTC

when you talk to others oustside here you have to remember whats important to you at that time and what can be handled at that time is all im saying

2018-04-12 06:09:19 UTC

i'll illustrate using this same conversation

2018-04-12 06:10:06 UTC

well im making a broad criticism of everyone. I think fat people and how they treat their children is part of a larger cultural phenomena. Which is neglecting responsibility.

2018-04-12 06:10:19 UTC

they guy above says this is because we dont slap kids, that derails his own argument, because now suddenly everyone has an opinion on what we werent already talking about

2018-04-12 06:11:02 UTC

We have an attitude in the west that our problems and out poor actions are because of external factors.

2018-04-12 06:11:22 UTC

its very risky to blame bad parenting in any situation where you dont have that information

2018-04-12 06:11:42 UTC

the criminal probly had bad parents, but they were nice enough to leave a sweet note on the guys fence

2018-04-12 06:11:43 UTC

which why there may be an element of truth to it. I think it is disingenuous to blame other people, or society for it.

2018-04-12 06:12:33 UTC

No i agree, I would just blame the parents for bad parenting.

2018-04-12 06:12:42 UTC

People like me with a lot of external factors need to be able to learn how to compartmentalize them and be productive in society

2018-04-12 06:12:55 UTC

I wouldnt blame the media, of television or hollywood or the internet

2018-04-12 06:13:13 UTC

it's great if a child can grow up with proper guidance. for the rest of us, it's like *well now what*.

2018-04-12 06:13:16 UTC

I wouldnt even blame biases that exist in society. I think bias is usually a good thing.

2018-04-12 06:13:30 UTC

the internet is another good example though

2018-04-12 06:13:42 UTC

who is responsbile for what children view on the internet

2018-04-12 06:13:55 UTC

the internet provider? the government? or the parents?

2018-04-12 06:14:05 UTC

seems obvious to me that it is the parents

2018-04-12 06:14:31 UTC

well then you ask why do so many children below age 10 now have smart phones

2018-04-12 06:14:44 UTC

the internet is the place a child today will get most of their education

2018-04-12 06:15:00 UTC

but i actually dont think its very important to protect kids from media

2018-04-12 06:15:09 UTC

I do

2018-04-12 06:15:22 UTC

on the other hand, the web is not like TV. its much more complicated

2018-04-12 06:15:48 UTC

I dont think much is saved by a child not getting to play GTA or see his first titty

2018-04-12 06:16:45 UTC

wandering into a social group could be pretty harmful though

2018-04-12 06:17:09 UTC

ok well GTA is a poor medium for sexual education

2018-04-12 06:17:28 UTC

There's no values being taught in relation to relationships

2018-04-12 06:18:00 UTC

In fact the exact opposite

2018-04-12 06:18:16 UTC

I think such an education would be damaging

2018-04-12 06:19:15 UTC

In fact i know it is because I saw it when i was growing up

2018-04-12 06:20:03 UTC

i think the more subtle messages they get can be more harmful

2018-04-12 06:20:54 UTC

well i dont think GTA needs to be that source of values education but it is important

2018-04-12 06:21:33 UTC

ideally values should be taught at home and in school but i would also argue those institutions are becoming increasingly decadent

2018-04-12 06:21:38 UTC

especially school

2018-04-12 06:21:43 UTC

religious families have a vehicle for teaching ethics, which is effective, though i'd argue it's not the best vehicle because it's confusing and stupid

2018-04-12 06:22:20 UTC

But a nonreligious family might not have such a vehicle at all

2018-04-12 06:22:39 UTC

maybe this is (another reason) why archetypical stories work well. they are easy to pass down with little education

2018-04-12 06:23:11 UTC

if i dont have a body of work to draw on, i have to teach my kids ethics by making up my *own* stories, and what if im just not the creative type

2018-04-12 06:23:33 UTC

I mean i dont have stats but i feel like we can safely assume that a christian family does better at parenting than a nonreligious family in general.

2018-04-12 06:24:00 UTC

i dont know why you would assume that

2018-04-12 06:24:00 UTC

They tend to be strongly oriented around the family
