I think i would have had chaos essentially win after a massive heroic struggle from everyone else, and then for all their forces to just retreat back to the warp for no apparant reason because the chaos gods wouldn't actually want to destroy the world or even crush civilisation. But all the survivors would have to rebuild knowing they were just being toyed with all along.
