@Omsomething I think in general taxes need a good reason to exist. It's easy to just take money from people, the question is; why should people give you money?

So, for instance, the vice tax, that doesn't really represent the people being taxed. At least I've not seen it in regards to smoking.

That is reverse logic really, personally i think "Will this money make the society more stable and is it of net benefit."

Sometimes you need to support people who do not deserve support for the good of all.

You smoke, pay 1$ tax per pack. You smoke for 20 years and maybe get sick. With interest that money is worth a bit, but you are suddenly a burden on society. *shrug* maybe if you didn't take their money they would've used it for health insurance.

@Omsomething It is an interesting debate to be sure. I'm sure you could get me to agree on some stuff, but it is still a fine line between good and a slippery slope of taxation.

I don't argue for arguments sake, I love hashing things out.

Well that is true, but aside my trolling my main argument is that US folk are biased against taxes and resenting them and talking shit about them is part of the "national feeling" of US.

Widen my horizons and such.
