The companies that collect their pallets probably do so for legal liability reasons.

Instead of trash being left out causing damage to someone, they collect it and dispose of it professionally.

Because these days you can sue for anything.

most time the truck driver takes the same amout of those pallets he delivered so the deposit isn't an issue

you would need to sand it, maybe oil and wax it and if you put that effort in, why not buy some wood
