Action needs to be taken to stop the censorship though

2019-03-29 06:03:37 UTC

Midterms were lost due to censorship

2019-03-29 06:04:15 UTC

`Our military leaders are saying that the work Google is doing in China is indirectly and perhaps directly benefiting China's military`
wasn't there some law in the past about not exporting military technology, of which software was at times included?

2019-03-29 06:04:26 UTC

always funny how its GOP and conservatives being censored getting but never the left

2019-03-29 06:08:35 UTC

There's a lot of things Google can do to benefit China's military that aren't illegal. Most importantly would be sharing access to google's own advanced technology like AI. Afaik nothing illegal about that.

2019-03-29 06:11:07 UTC

if you go to a site from usa, the site knows you're from the usa and then it will show you the page without article 13 restrictions

2019-03-29 06:11:16 UTC

it's quite basic internet protocol

2019-03-29 06:11:23 UTC

`The [Arms Export Control] Act also places certain restrictions on American arms traders and manufacturers, prohibiting them from the sale of certain sensitive technologies to certain parties and requiring thorough documentation of such trades to trusted parties.`

2019-03-29 06:12:15 UTC

same way european users can use vpn to go past article 13 restrictions

2019-03-29 06:13:58 UTC

Interesting but I don't know the details of that. If I were to guess, I would imagine it would apply more to things like weapons software, targeting, guidance for example. Something like AI for social control is a whole different animal.

2019-03-29 06:14:09 UTC

I'm thinking about China's social credit system.

2019-03-29 06:15:12 UTC

My point is I'm sure there are certain technologies that are restricted but you can't just say that because we have this one law we can use it to restrict whatever we want.

2019-03-29 06:15:26 UTC

encryption software used to be covered by the law

2019-03-29 06:15:32 UTC

was quite a meme at one point

2019-03-29 06:15:37 UTC

it still is

2019-03-29 06:15:50 UTC

you can't use certain encryptions in asia

2019-03-29 06:16:00 UTC

or decryptions to be more exact

2019-03-29 06:17:26 UTC

`Since World War II, many governments, including the U.S. and its NATO allies, have regulated the export of cryptography for national security reasons, and, as late as 1992, cryptography was on the U.S. Munitions List as an Auxiliary Military Equipment`

2019-03-29 06:19:15 UTC

now, you could easily make the case that AI is at least as important a concern from a national security PoV as encryption is

2019-03-29 06:19:55 UTC

that just says it's not categorized as auxiliary anymore

2019-03-29 06:20:08 UTC

yes but it was for like 5 decades

2019-03-29 06:20:23 UTC

Well now I'd say you're making an interesting case.

2019-03-29 06:20:24 UTC

so there is precedent

2019-03-29 06:20:25 UTC

internet didn't really exist before 92

2019-03-29 06:20:30 UTC

I'd like to hear more of it.

2019-03-29 06:20:46 UTC

and encryption in arpanet was fairly simple

2019-03-29 06:20:51 UTC

you had germans encrypting telegrams since WWII at least

2019-03-29 06:21:01 UTC

it's not internet specific

2019-03-29 06:21:03 UTC

since they only let in certain users

2019-03-29 06:21:36 UTC

that one guy broke the german encryption and then that sweet lady queen put him in jail

2019-03-29 06:21:40 UTC

turing

2019-03-29 06:23:40 UTC

being a senile old man i can't remember the name of that 'software', allied were going to acquire an encryption device but they never got around to it because an autistic homosexual gentlemen cracked the code

2019-03-29 06:23:46 UTC

enigma

2019-03-29 06:25:05 UTC

I remember the US used an indian language to encrypt messages during ww2

2019-03-29 06:25:23 UTC

yeah straight up navajo

2019-03-29 06:25:34 UTC

it was the only one japanese couldn't crack

2019-03-29 07:02:57 UTC

My tax return came in.

2019-03-29 07:02:59 UTC

Yeet.

2019-03-29 07:16:13 UTC
