Reading through the report, it seems like they were able to finish their project. Looks like most of their grants were through NIH and University of Kansas...though 2 of the researchers were supported by McNeil Health, which is part of Johnson&Johnson. So it's plausible that there was something underhanded, but I would think they'd push toward preventing publication. However, they could benefit from a painkiller that they have no patent control over being removed from the market. So the argument could be made both ways, that they stopped the research or that they had a hand in fostering the results.
