RT said this about the mission: "The tragedy occurred on Monday when a previously unknown nuclear-powered deep-sea research vessel was mapping the seabed of the Barents Sea off Russia’s northern coast. The military said that the fire broke out in the sub’s battery compartment and spread quickly."

Also..

"The incident happened somewherewithin Russia’s territorial waters in the Barents Sea. The officials said that the research vessel was mapping the seabed, but did not reveal the vessel’s name and gave little details of what had happened on board. The source of the fire remains unclear."

Combine these statements above with the "combat" and "planetary disaster" quotes.  Scientific mission turns into a combat situation with nearly planetary consequences, and it all happens within Russian territorial waters!?!  WTF?

Another fact:  The average depth of the Barents Sea is 250 meters!  The Russian navy must have known the underwater topography of the Barents Sea like a street map of Moscow.  Why use a secret nuclear powered deep sea submarine, with heavy amounts of high ranking brass on board, for a simple mapping mission?
