The rough and medium stone should be large, the fine stone should be about an inch and a half by 5 or 6 inches so you can easily manipulate it as it will be used to make circles while the large ones will be used in a push motion.

You manipulate the blade with the large stones but manipulate the stone with the fine stone.

2021-01-13 07:17:58 UTC

You can also buy machines to do it automatically.

2021-01-13 07:19:29 UTC

Ah I see

2021-01-13 07:19:50 UTC

How do the ratings match with the numbered ratings?

2021-01-13 07:20:02 UTC

I know there are 1000 and 6000

2021-01-13 07:20:07 UTC

It varies depending on the country

2021-01-13 07:20:43 UTC

I use a 900, 1000, 5000, 8000, and 16000 stone.

2021-01-13 07:20:54 UTC

You can buy double sided ones.

2021-01-13 07:21:00 UTC

I also own a chalk stone

2021-01-13 07:21:07 UTC

Oh

2021-01-13 07:21:10 UTC

Is it more coarse the smaller it is or the bigger it is?

2021-01-13 07:21:11 UTC

Well shit

2021-01-13 07:21:38 UTC

Smaller the number the more course it is.

2021-01-13 07:21:38 UTC

I've only been using a fine stone all this time!

2021-01-13 07:21:52 UTC

It's like sandpaper

2021-01-13 07:22:15 UTC

Ah, so the duller the knife is the smaller number you want to a certain extent right?

2021-01-13 07:22:39 UTC

You usually use all of your stones once

2021-01-13 07:22:48 UTC

Then your fine stone over the next 3 times

2021-01-13 07:22:53 UTC

Then all of the stones

2021-01-13 07:23:00 UTC

Repeat

2021-01-13 07:23:04 UTC

Ah to get a more refined edge right?

2021-01-13 07:23:15 UTC

More or less

2021-01-13 07:23:16 UTC

No to maintain it

2021-01-13 07:23:30 UTC

I know nothing about whetstones 🤣

2021-01-13 07:23:39 UTC

Btw a razor has about a 15 degree edge to it

2021-01-13 07:23:45 UTC

I used one once in scouts around 5 years ago

2021-01-13 07:23:45 UTC

Just sayin

2021-01-13 07:23:45 UTC

Think of it like sandpaper.

2021-01-13 07:23:59 UTC

You can also use sandpaper and a belt sander.

2021-01-13 07:24:04 UTC

So if you want a blade razor sharp...

2021-01-13 07:24:17 UTC

Well a 15 degree blade doesn't last

2021-01-13 07:24:39 UTC

A 23 degree blade is the best for sharpness and lasting

2021-01-13 07:24:46 UTC

Ah

2021-01-13 07:25:02 UTC

I'm gonna go do some research on Amazon. Thanks for the help!

2021-01-13 07:25:22 UTC

I'll update you if I ever find a whetstone 🤣

2021-01-13 07:25:39 UTC

Yeah between 20-25 degrees is usually your best bet

2021-01-13 07:26:21 UTC

I'm just sayin if he wants it razor sharp now he knows what to do

2021-01-13 07:29:09 UTC

Also get what is known as a chalk stone, a stone so fine it feels like you're just rubbing tough chalk against the blade.

2021-01-13 14:14:31 UTC
