I remember watching a video about the American po box system once
Something about numbers spray painted in the road
When the country started you have to go to the post office to get your mail then as towns grew larger they started using PO Boxes
In the 1930s they brought in rural delivery

Up until a few years ago if you lived in an area that did not have mail delivery you would get a free PO box
