thomas sowell did an interesting investigation into this, and found that black immigrants and black immigrant kids do generally better in school, work, etc. compared to blacks people born in America, despite both living on neighbourhoods close to each other

This below statement isn’t research backed just as a disclaimer but, I believe the reason that is is because in the lower neighborhoods there tends to be a “family” connection between everyone. And if you leave that family, you could lose the respect of them and those around them as well. So really almost a peer pressure type deal
