@Mandatory Carry They're not. They have first mover advantage and abused their size and (((connections))) to crush any competition. Looks at sites like gab or stream.me. They're being undermined by a tech-trust from California which pretty much dictates the laws of the internet through tight control over: domains, registars, payment processors, DDoS protection etc. What the tech industry is today is a very real and massive cartel which got to where it is due to a lack of regulation over a newly developing medium. By the time the regulations began catching up to them they were already big enough to field one of the largest lobbying groups in the US allowing them to use the state as a tool to further entich themselves and to make sure their monopoly is maintained indefinitely.
Having the state run these semi-public companies would be better for everyone. As it is right now these companies regulate themselves and their agenda is clear and unchanging - hardcore progressive liberalism. You can't vote these people out of power.

The bank-rolled/cartel model of the modern tech industry really can't get any worse. They command sections of society which are necessary to access and maintain certain social rank. They effectively wield more power than the government and even use it for their own ends without any accountability. It is a rule of oligarchs where there is no law outside the fluctuating whims of the corporations in power.
Having the state take it over would be a step in the right direction but ideally they should be shaken up with the majority of the higher ups tried for various crimes against humanity.
