Overall it was a dumb idea, because there was a large loophole pharmaceutical companies used to push pain pills

according to this TED talk, most of this drug addiction is caused anyway due to societal/social problems,
if you have a working social net, family, you basically have no reason to develop an addiction,
it's only when the family unit gets destroyed, etc
then this shit starts to happen more and more (and imho that's why the demand for that shit is so high)
(and then ofc add the prescription madness)

That's part of it, but there are many good people who take one drink of alcohol and get addicted even with a good social net

with the mexico / cartel thing, I just don't know the details ...
I mean, the cartels see, that there is demand and money to be made ...
if there was no incentive / money, there would also be no drug cartels (or at least less)
