Someone explain the bad math of this problem to me:
A size of a jumbo candy bar with a rectangular shape is l x w x h. Due to the rising costs of cocoa, the volume of the candy bar is to be reduced by p%. to accomplish this, the management decided to keep the thickness, h, of the candy bar the same, and reduce the length and width by the same amount. For example, if l = 12, w = 7, h = 3, and p = 10, then the new dimension of the candy bar is 11.39 x 6.64 x 3. Write a program to accomplish this.
How the fuck do you get 11.39 from 12 with a 10 percent difference?

2019-06-18 16:18:23 UTC

What fucking dopes are writing textbooks nowadays?

2019-06-18 16:24:58 UTC

It’s 5% less than 12

2019-06-18 16:25:44 UTC

The volumetric reduction is distributed to 2 dimensions

2019-06-18 16:26:15 UTC

If you calculate the volume reduction, it is correct

2019-06-18 16:27:20 UTC

10% decrease is a factor of 0.9. Distribute this across n dimensions by the nth root.

This hasn't to do with volume though, it's purely dimensional.

2019-06-18 16:30:20 UTC

The only thing this problems asks to account for is length, width, and height.

2019-06-18 16:31:05 UTC

I understand where you're coming from, but going off of what the problem asks for, volume isn't a factor

2019-06-18 16:31:19 UTC

It says right there in your text
**"the volume of the candy bar is to be reduced by p%"** verbatim

I need more sleep

I'm actually fucking retarded. πŸ”«

I love the maths problems which give you WALLSOFTEXT and only like half a line is actually relevant. It's almost like an English test.

2019-06-18 16:34:51 UTC

This is programming first and foremost, and when you're highschool doesn't require geometry and your college doesn't either, you kinda fall off with your math skills.

2019-06-18 16:35:19 UTC

Then there is the asshole teacher who also gives you a 1 line equation and like an hour to solve it.

2019-06-18 16:35:19 UTC

Algebra is fine. Geometry... not so much.

2019-06-18 16:36:02 UTC

And you come back tomorrow being proud and he tells you your answer is wrong.

2019-06-18 16:36:04 UTC

trig can burn

2019-06-18 16:36:10 UTC

Fun times.

2019-06-18 16:37:42 UTC

He's an asshole but you cant not admire his style.

2019-06-18 16:39:02 UTC

I halved P to account for every dimension im altering, and I come up with 11.49 and 6.65 for length and width respectively. A tad off, anything I can do to reach the answer provided exactly?

2019-06-18 16:39:33 UTC

11.4

2019-06-18 16:39:37 UTC

scuse me, mistyped

2019-06-18 16:40:23 UTC

I think you need to sleep. It's sqrt(1 - p%).

2019-06-18 16:40:58 UTC

Never learned that equation. I'll have to write that one down for future reference.

2019-06-18 16:42:13 UTC

And what's the name for that equation specifically?

2019-06-18 16:42:43 UTC

I dunno. I dont memorise names

They call him a far-right conspiracy theorist despite the fact that he knows he just does it for entertainment.
