Pretty much

2020-11-19 05:40:34 UTC

My American Lit class is studying The Crucible at the moment and I want to bring up the McCarthyism and witch hunts in class

2020-11-19 05:40:49 UTC

I don't have enough faith in my classmates to add the two together

2020-11-19 05:42:23 UTC

I haven't had a class in 20 years. Can't remember the crucible, or if I read it.
I'd just caution that you have your facts together. You're gonna have many of your peers angry with you.

2020-11-19 05:44:51 UTC

Yeah

2020-11-19 05:45:27 UTC

Well I kind of splayed out what I know to one of my friends at the moment

2020-11-19 05:47:00 UTC

In short, going against public opinion or being accused of something can create a mob
Your reputation, job, life, will be in ruins
And you'll be socially isolated
At least that's how I see it

2020-11-19 05:47:44 UTC

Social media enables that mob mentality to doxx people and basically send a lynch mob to your door

2020-11-19 05:48:36 UTC

Is your focus on Social Media or are you going broader than that?

2020-11-19 05:49:22 UTC

I'd say social media because it's more relatable to students and cancel culture happens on the internet

2020-11-19 05:51:38 UTC

Are you prepped to answer "why" it's become acceptable and "how" that happened?

2020-11-19 05:51:53 UTC

Also, do you do well with public speaking?

2020-11-19 05:53:45 UTC

I'm not fixing to go into a lecture. Let's just say I have experience with impromptu classroom debates

2020-11-19 05:54:35 UTC

I wanted to see how ready you are.

2020-11-19 05:57:23 UTC

I'm not prepared for a class discussion but I do pretty well with public speakyas long as I know what I'm talking about

2020-11-19 05:57:35 UTC

I'd like to see how my teacher reacts

2020-11-19 05:58:10 UTC

At least to show her that I'm making connections between literature, history, and current reality

2020-11-19 05:59:12 UTC

If you'd like to help me strengthen my argument for why cancel culture is like McCarthyism I'd appreciate it

2020-11-19 06:02:44 UTC

Back in the late 40s to mid 50s, Joseph McCarthy was a Senator who led investigations into possible Communist agents living/working among us. They were considered to be the modern equivalent of a witch hunt.

2020-11-19 06:03:40 UTC

There was propaganda spread around for citizens to turn in anyone they suspect of being a communist sympathizer.

2020-11-19 06:04:08 UTC

One wrong move could've ruined your life during that time

2020-11-19 06:04:41 UTC

That's just what I can remember off the top of my head.

2020-11-19 06:05:40 UTC

That also reminds me of being a Trump supporter

2020-11-19 06:05:55 UTC

Or even if you don't agree with the radical left

2020-11-19 06:05:56 UTC

🛎️

2020-11-19 06:06:17 UTC

If you're neutral, you're a sympathizer

2020-11-19 06:06:32 UTC

Anyone to the right of stalin

2020-11-19 06:06:56 UTC

I'm not sure how my class would take that

2020-11-19 06:07:43 UTC

They'd probably prove my point, try to "cancel me" through means of social isolation

2020-11-19 06:07:48 UTC

Wondered when you'd show, lol

2020-11-19 06:07:49 UTC

Alrighty

2020-11-19 06:08:01 UTC

😅 sorry bout that

2020-11-19 06:08:13 UTC

2020-11-19 06:08:28 UTC

Wanna continue over there?

2020-11-19 06:08:54 UTC
