idk what gpu to buy to replace my 1050ti with

2020-12-27 19:28:03 UTC

I have like $1000 budget but only if I need to

2020-12-27 19:28:15 UTC

1440p at around 60fps on mostly high settings?

2020-12-27 19:28:23 UTC

I also develop in a framework that is cross compatible so I can do majority of dev in windows. When I need to do Linux specific tasks like compile the operating system I can do it in a vm

2020-12-27 19:28:25 UTC

I only keep a Windows VM hanging around for my research reference manager because even thou the software has a Linux management interface, it currently only interfaces with Microsoft office and not libre office in my experience even thou the website says it should be able to.

I have a 1080 ti and run dual 4k monitors without issue

2020-12-27 19:29:12 UTC

what about gaming though

2020-12-27 19:29:30 UTC

> framework that is cross compatible so I can do majority of dev in windows.

2020-12-27 19:29:34 UTC

even more the reason to NOT use windows?

2020-12-27 19:29:40 UTC

if its cross compatible do it all in linux then?

2020-12-27 19:29:55 UTC

I have no issues with it doing cod that's probably the most intensive game I run

2020-12-27 19:30:03 UTC

hmm

2020-12-27 19:30:04 UTC

fair enough

2020-12-27 19:30:17 UTC

im making my own voxel game engine

2020-12-27 19:30:21 UTC

and raytracing is very expensive

2020-12-27 19:30:28 UTC

I have a power House computer for gaming that runs windows that's why I dev in windows

2020-12-27 19:30:41 UTC

see thats why im gonna do windows kvm

2020-12-27 19:30:53 UTC

so I can dev in linux but game in windows without having to wait ages to reboot

2020-12-27 19:30:55 UTC

What is y'all's experience with steam proton? I don't get to game very often, but most games I've tried worked fairly well.

2020-12-27 19:30:59 UTC

its good

2020-12-27 19:31:03 UTC

but lots of games dont work at all

2020-12-27 19:31:06 UTC

the games that do work work fine

2020-12-27 19:31:13 UTC

Never used it myself

2020-12-27 19:31:15 UTC

but well, pubg, rust, any game with an anticheat doesnt run on it

2020-12-27 19:31:36 UTC

most games dont even allow running in a vm but there are bypasses for detection

2020-12-27 19:32:16 UTC

Wish I could get steam proton to work with other games not in steam. I've made a note of buying most of my new games from GOG rather then Steam so I'm not locked into steam.

2020-12-27 19:33:03 UTC

I usually just end up running them with regular WINE but the proton version of wine I believe has more gaming optimizations.

2020-12-27 19:33:15 UTC

ye

2020-12-27 19:35:00 UTC

I feel like a lot of people would be happy if among us would just release a Linux version

2020-12-27 19:35:33 UTC

Luckily with so many people moving towards cloud based apps Linux compatibility with business facing applications is becoming better

2020-12-27 19:36:01 UTC

Although then that usually means software turns into a subscription based pay model and not buy once own forever

2020-12-27 19:36:08 UTC

Which I hate

2020-12-27 19:36:19 UTC

What annoys me is with these cloud gaming platforms, they almost all run Linux so you know the games have a Linux port. However, the gaming company still won't release the software for Linux.

It really is terrifying to watch non computer savvy people use the internet though. It makes me realize why paid antivirus is still a necessity and why scammers are so successful. All these common sense safe things you don't click on or do is not apparent to everyone. And while I dislike av when I see people like my mother in law use the computer I have no choice but to recommend them get an antivirus

How long does it take to reboot your pc? I got a cheapo (24$ ebay) Kingston A400 240GB SSD and it cold boots windows after a linux shutdown in 15 seconds, tops

2020-12-27 20:25:20 UTC

Although i will be upgrading it to a Sun F40 Flash Accelerator Card, and just use a sandisk u110 for boot, and the F40 for storage, and i'll give the kingston to my brother

2020-12-27 20:49:38 UTC

I think my windows boots in about the same time

2020-12-27 20:49:49 UTC

NVME drive

2020-12-27 21:52:53 UTC

I guess

2020-12-27 21:53:15 UTC

but it doesnt change the inability to multitask on both OS' at the same time
