idk what gpu to buy to replace my 1050ti with
I have like $1000 budget but only if I need to
1440p at around 60fps on mostly high settings?
I also develop in a framework that is cross compatible so I can do majority of dev in windows. When I need to do Linux specific tasks like compile the operating system I can do it in a vm
I only keep a Windows VM hanging around for my research reference manager because even thou the software has a Linux management interface, it currently only interfaces with Microsoft office and not libre office in my experience even thou the website says it should be able to.
I have a 1080 ti and run dual 4k monitors without issue
what about gaming though
> framework that is cross compatible so I can do majority of dev in windows.
even more the reason to NOT use windows?
if its cross compatible do it all in linux then?
I have no issues with it doing cod that's probably the most intensive game I run
hmm
fair enough
im making my own voxel game engine
and raytracing is very expensive
I have a power House computer for gaming that runs windows that's why I dev in windows
see thats why im gonna do windows kvm
so I can dev in linux but game in windows without having to wait ages to reboot
What is y'all's experience with steam proton? I don't get to game very often, but most games I've tried worked fairly well.
its good
the games that do work work fine
Never used it myself
but well, pubg, rust, any game with an anticheat doesnt run on it
most games dont even allow running in a vm but there are bypasses for detection
Wish I could get steam proton to work with other games not in steam. I've made a note of buying most of my new games from GOG rather then Steam so I'm not locked into steam.
I usually just end up running them with regular WINE but the proton version of wine I believe has more gaming optimizations.
ye
I feel like a lot of people would be happy if among us would just release a Linux version
Luckily with so many people moving towards cloud based apps Linux compatibility with business facing applications is becoming better
Although then that usually means software turns into a subscription based pay model and not buy once own forever
Which I hate
What annoys me is with these cloud gaming platforms, they almost all run Linux so you know the games have a Linux port. However, the gaming company still won't release the software for Linux.
It really is terrifying to watch non computer savvy people use the internet though. It makes me realize why paid antivirus is still a necessity and why scammers are so successful. All these common sense safe things you don't click on or do is not apparent to everyone. And while I dislike av when I see people like my mother in law use the computer I have no choice but to recommend them get an antivirus
How long does it take to reboot your pc? I got a cheapo (24$ ebay) Kingston A400 240GB SSD and it cold boots windows after a linux shutdown in 15 seconds, tops
Although i will be upgrading it to a Sun F40 Flash Accelerator Card, and just use a sandisk u110 for boot, and the F40 for storage, and i'll give the kingston to my brother
I think my windows boots in about the same time
NVME drive
I guess
but it doesnt change the inability to multitask on both OS' at the same time
