Well, San Antonio has the 6th largest population, but you do have population centers of Abilene, Midland, Odessa, El Paso, Laredo, Eagle Pass, and Del Rio.

Yes, Houston is the fourth or third largest city in the US, Dallas is the eighth and has the Metroplex. The other cities I mention may have at most 400,000 people... Oh I forgot San Angelo, but still the population centers are too far from each other. San Antonio draws in Laredo, Del Rio, and Eagle Pass as well.
