Back in the day US carriers had A-3s, A-4s, A-5s, A-6s, F-8s, F-4s, Sh-3s and S-2s.

Now it's just F18s F35s and Seahawks and E2s

The early a5 Vigilantes were designated A3J

Have you seen the anime Gate? There was this cool scene where a dragon was stabled in, well a stable, and a fighter jet comes and bombs the hell out of them with some Combat Controllers painting the target.
