There is a difference in 5.56 nato and .223 as well as 7.62 nato vs. .308. Pressures are very different. You will most likely lose your face shooting nato rounds through civilian barrels.

Also different cartridge sizes

Cartridge size is the same. Or so similar that the differences are insignificant. Its in the barrel. Nato barrels and civilian barrels have different spaces from where the bullet sits chambered and where the rifling begins.
