The way I see it, there are two interpretations

2021-01-02 09:10:36 UTC

One is Mount Sinai is indeed in Arabia

2021-01-02 09:10:57 UTC

Two is that the word Hagar refers to Mount Sinai, for Arabians

I have a question for some Christians in this server

2021-01-02 17:30:15 UTC

I’m being confirmed as a Catholic in spring, and I’m currently working through this big book. I was told a month ago by someone on this server that Christians don’t see a need for a Pope. According to this book, Jesus appointed Peter as the leader of the church, the Catholic Church. I also read about some edits Catholics made to the Bible to fit their beliefs, is this one of the changes because if Jesus *really* appointed a pope, I don’t see a reason there shouldn’t be one. If Jesus did appoint a church leader, why shouldn’t there be one now?

2021-01-02 17:38:16 UTC

The Bible only gives two church leaders, the pastor (also called bishop or elder) or the deacon. A priest is not in context of a New Testament church, and monk, nun, cardinal, pope, etc. all do not occur in the Bible. If it is not in the Bible, it ought not be accepted for the church because the Bible is the sole authority for faith and practice in church. Thus, the pope is an unbiblical position. Regarding that specifically, there was no pope position until about the year 606. For the church in Rome, up until that point there were only bishops over it. The year 606, Emperor Phocas, the emperor of the Roman Empire, bestowed upon the Roman Bishop Boniface III the title of Papa, meaning the Pope, or supreme father, as in over all churches. It had not existed before then. In fact, the previous head of the Rome church, Gregory III (d. 604), had resisted that being made of him, and said, “If a bishop, whoever he be, is called a general bishop (that is, pope), the whole church decays.” He also said, “I candidly say that any one who calls himself a general bishop, or desires to be called such, is, in his exaltation, the forerunner of antichrist.” His words were prophetic! The pope has been called the antichrist by many, many groups through the centuries.

That’s very interesting, and makes me want to change my religion more

2021-01-02 17:40:45 UTC

As for Peter, that is a false claim from a false understanding of Matt. 16:18. It is an illegitimate claim, which Roman Catholicism does a lot of in its history (see Donations of Constantine for example). There is no one head over all churches in the world. The only head is the Lord Jesus Christ (Col. 1:18). And man that claims that is usurping that position from the Lord Jesus, which is blasphemy.

I feel..lied to. Thanks

2021-01-02 17:41:38 UTC

I fully encourage you to do so. You are free to DM if you would like. I have studied Catholicism in comparison to the Bible many times over the years.

2021-01-02 17:43:15 UTC

I don’t feel that I can leave the Catholic Church months before my confirmation. My parents wouldn’t be too happy with me. However I might later

2021-01-02 17:44:31 UTC

Every person will answer for themselves before God--your parents won't be able to do so for you, only for themselves. You cannot allow them to control how your judgment before God will go, you need to do that for yourself.
